APRIL UTGAVE 2026/ APRIL EDITION 2026

Awakening from the winter apathy

It’s that time of year again – flowers are blossoming, trees are blooming, and everything is slowly coming back to life. Yet, we are still faced with the same old problems. Between rising living costs, war, instability, and despair, world leaders often seem to do as they please while everyone else struggles to keep up.

More and more people are longing for peace, stability, and the “good old days”. Nostalgia is very much “in”; there is a growing desire to simply relive the past, be content, and mind our own business. Except, we cannot. We cannot afford to be complacent, silent, or ignorant of the world around us. Suffering, instability, and injustice are more prevalent than ever. It is easy to turn away from what doesn’t directly affect us – and that is perfectly understandable. It is human nature to strive for comfort and safety.

Not everyone can be a frontline fighter, nor is that necessary. It is enough that we do not stay silent, but instead stay informed. Alongside this longing for the past, we are seeing a worrying rise in anti-intellectualism. While concerning, this is something we can combat through simple actions: Read books, consume art, participate in culture, and engage with your community.

I want to encourage everyone to delve deeper into art, as it is a subject close to my heart. Recent editions of Unikum have been filled with great art content, from reviews and recommendations to reportages and opinions. There is a common misconception that more “traditional” art forms, like painting or classical music, are “snobby” or reserved for the elite. This could not be further from the truth. Art is one of the most universal languages known to humans; I have yet to experience an art piece that was “reserved” for only one group to enjoy.

Art can and should be enjoyed by everyone. Now, perhaps more than ever, it is essential that we move beyond passivity and actively engage with it. Visit your local gallery, buy a print from a local artist, go to an indie concert at the student pub, and support up-and-coming creators. Art is one of the most beautiful aspects of life. It fosters unity and community, which is exactly what we need right now.

Use the springtime, often linked with rebirth and rejuvenation, to delve into the beautiful world of art and build your community. Find beauty in the everyday life and enjoy it to the fullest!

Happy spring everyone!
